Away from the intense hustle of neighboring Bellagio, Riva Grande is where travelers come to slow down, sip espresso by the water, and watch the ferries cross the shimmering lake. Navigating this historic waterfront efficiently requires a few insider tips, especially during the peak summer months when the sun stays high and the lakeside terraces fill quickly.

The Perfect Riverside Morning

Start your visit early by arriving via the ferry from Bellagio or Menaggio around 9:00 AM, beating the midday heat and the largest crowds. Step off the boat and immediately take the Passeggiata dell'Amore (Lover's Walk), a red-railed cantilevered pathway hugging the cliffside that leads directly to Riva Grande.

Once at the promenade, find a quiet lakeside table at one of the small cafes for a traditional Italian breakfast of cornetto and cappuccino. Spend your late morning wandering the steep, narrow stone staircases (contrade) that rise up from the water into the historic heart of Varenna.
